Books and movies for the month of Valentine.

If you are one of those KWEL Oh-I-don’t-believe-in-Valentine’s day-Everyday-for-me-is-Valentine’s Day-So-why-only-one-day-for-love, people then you are requested to avoid reading this blog entry.

Books.

1. Love in the time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez

Reason: How long can you wait for love? How long WILL you wait for love?

Read a story of altruistic love. Feel what is to be on the giving end without ever thinking of giving up.

It’s a quest for love, without the assurance.

2. The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey Niffenegger

Reason: The state of separation and unison in love has never been portrayed as resplendently as it is in this book.

It’s about the uncertainty of the moment, knowing that it-will-be-gone.
It’s about having faith in love, believing but-it-will-be-back.

3. Brida by Paulo Coelho

Reason: When you meet your soul mate, you see the light.

Without knowing who and what s/he is…you know that s/he is the one.

So if you are one of those losers, like me, who strongly believe in love at/on first sight/meeting, this book is for YOU.

4. Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason by Helen Fielding

Reason: Forget Bridget Jones’s Diary. While Bridget in that was all busy in finding the love of her life, this is all about happily (?) ever after part.

It’s Hilarious. It’s amusing. It’s real.

Know about going crazy when in love. Voices in your head. Insecurities. Perplexity. Putting- thing-s in- your- head by your friends. Advices, suggestion and interference of your parents. Seeking approval of everyone around you. Obsession. Imaginary conversations. Thoughts even in your sleep. Making stories out of nothing. Being clueless. The constant fear of losing. 24/7 thinking non-stop. Not getting enough. Just being madly in love.

And no I don’t see my future self in Bridget Jones.

5. Love Story by Erich Segal

Reason: The beauty of this story lies in its purity.

Despite sad ending, the narration of the book is feel-good and refreshing.

It is a book to finish in one sitting. And its simplicity will touch your heart.

Movies.

1.The Notebook:

Reason: One of the very few films which was BETTER AND has MORE POWERFUL IMPACT than the book.

It’s dreamy. It’s poetic.

It’s the love, we all, in our heart, are in search for.

It’s a movie you must see before you die. MUST.

2.Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind:

Reason: An innovative love plot.

You can erase memories but not love. When it is meant to be, it IS meant to be.

The script of the movie is phenomenal.

Kate Winslet is Phenomenal.

Jim Carrey’s “other” side is Phenomenal.

The film has abyssal depths. To embrace that, watch the movie.

3.PS: I love you

Reason: If you don’t cry while watching the movie, die robot DIE DIE DIE. YOU have NO right to live. You are as purposeless on this planet earth as … RATS.

Death takes away the person, but not the relation.

Love. To love.

4.Kate and Leopold

Reason: Two people from different times, having opinions Poles Apart, different goals and nothing in common, getting connected, falling in love.

One of the best romcoms I have seen.

5.Letters to Juliet

Two reasons:

1.You should watch this movie, on a romantic getaway because it is highly and heavily and excruciatingly predictable and there’s nothing complicated about it. And that’s the exact reason why this movie is SO perfect to watch with your date, when your mind rather set on the person sitting next to you than to actually figure out what is going on on the screen.

2.Italy. Italy. UFFFFFFFFFFF ITALY. One of the most romantic cinematographies I have seen. I salute the cinematographer of this movie.

10 Fiction books you-must-read-before-you-die

1. A thousand splendid suns.

Reason: This book expounds on talibanization in Afghanistan and since, unknown heights of agony, Afghan women had to reach.

This book narrates what a woman is capable of and what is to be a woman.

This book gives away a rudimentary fact, “Like a compass needle that points north, a man’s accusing finger always finds a woman.”

2. The Notebook.

Reason: Almost everyone in this big wide world and beyond can ink pages and chant non-stop on the most hackneyed subject, “what is love.” But to know and to feel “what is to love someone”, read the book.

3. The Godfather by Mario Puzo.

Reason: Discover the world of mafia in real terms.

This book is the father of all crime-thriller books.

4. To kill a mocking bird by Harper Lee.

Reason: Learning becomes a lot easier when a book is under a garb of humor.

Learn about America. Learn about discrimination. Learn about double standards. Learn about principles. Learn about a lawyer…and this time, in a different manner.

5. Veronika decides to die by Paulo Coelho.

Reason: Not necessarily there is always a reason to kill yourself, sometimes there is no reason to live. And in that case, discover yourself, assimilate yourself in strange territories, take risks and do not afraid to “live” life.

Do not break the madness, instead, own it.

6. Acts of Faith by Erich Segal.

Reason: It’s about a constant war of three lives with religion for desiring their own path.

An overwhelming depiction of defined borders of religion with boundary less heart.

Jerusalem imagery is enthralling.

I personally think that it’s the most underrated work of Erich Segal.

7. The prodigal daughter by Jeffery Archer.

Reason: No one can produce a literary work so accurately and so strikingly on American politics as Jerry Archer does.

Florentyna Kane-the protagonist- The woman all men fantasize. The woman all women idealize, expressly or secretly.

8. Moth Smoke by Mohsin Hamid.

Reason: Most probably the ONLY book by desi contemporary writers which is NOT about Afghanistan, talibanization, 9/11, America, Iraq war and Islam.

Errm it was written before 9/11, so naturally.

It’s about Pakistan of 90s.

It’s about inner conflicts.

It’s about betrayal in different forms.

One of the best thrillers in the history of desi thrillers.

9. The Rainmaker by John Grisham.

Reason: You wouldn’t know what hit you.

It’s a journey of a lawyer whose life changes 360 degrees. Yes “360” degrees.

This book is the best to read when you are on dieting. As you won’t eat, sleep and do anything, your sole aim of life would be to read, read and read till the end.

10. Rage of angels by Sidney Sheldon.

Reason: A complete thriller by the master of thrillers—Sidney Sheldon.

Power. Tough choices. Deception. Love. Anguish.

This was the book which motivated me to become a lawyer. Sounds stupid?
Wait.

Michael Moretti — The powerful and astute Don– the main adversary of this book and my ideal match. Yeah…I have a bad guy syndrome. Thank you very much !

Oh and btw I vehemently believe that he and I would do great together. Just come out of the book, my love Michael.
